DAYS 106 – 114: GEORGIA

After crossing the border from Azerbaijan into Georgia you will head for the beautiful Lagodekhi Nature Reserve where you will camp for the night and can take some short walks through the forest.

Continuing your overland tour through Georgia you will drive to the Alazani Valley and on to Telavi, where you will be based for 2 days to explore this fascinating region which is particularly known for its vineyards and wineries. There are hundreds of different grapes grown here, and every village has its own particular variety. You will visit some of the local vineyards today, where you can hopefully see some of the local traditions including grape harvesting and wine making, and enjoy some famous Georgian hospitality.

From Telavi you will head to Georgia’s capital, Tbilisi, where you will have two nights and an included visit to the old town of Tbilisi and sites including the National Museum, Sioni Cathedral and the Metekhi Temple.

From Tbilisi you will take a beautiful drive to the spectacularly located town of Kazbegi. A highlight of visiting Kazbegi is to trek up to the Tsminda Sameba Church (the Church of the Holy Trinity), a beautiful small church nestled in the mountains.

Returning from Kazbegi you will have another beautiful drive to the town of ancient UNESCO World Heritage Site of Mtskheta where you will stay overnight in a local guesthouse and explore the 11th century Svetitskhoveli Cathedral.

Leaving Mtskheta you will drive to Gori, the birthplace of Stalin, where you will have a guided tour of the city and the Stalin Museum. Your overland tour will then continue to the ancient town of Kutaisi and in the afternoon you will visit the medieval Brathati Cathedral and Gelati Monastery.

The next morning you will drive to the Black Sea port town of Batumi where you will have a free afternoon to explore.
