Is this trip for me?

If you have decided that overlanding is for you, but just need to know which trip will best suit you, here are some things to think about:

Accommodation – this trip has a low percentage of camping (around 20%). Most accommodation is in hotel style accommodation on a twin-sharing basis, however there are also several yurt stays and homestays which are a fantastic way to experience the local ways of life. While staying in yurts you will be sharing with 4-8 people, and in homestays the rooms vary so it is important that you have a flexible approach to this. Dorms are also used on occasion.

Weather – this trip start runs through Central Asia during the height of summer and you can expect high temperatures (35 degrees +) in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, but you can still expect some cold conditions in parts of Kyrgyzstan so you will still need a good quality sleeping bag and some warm clothes. In South East Asia you can expect hot and humid conditions and you may wish to send home some of your cold weather gear, the postal service from Laos is reliable and relatively inexpensive.

Nature vs Culture – this trip offers a lot on both fronts – if you are interested in history then the Silk Road cities of Uzbekistan, the incredible sights of Iran and the Buddhist sites in China will all impress. If nature and wide-open spaces are more your thing, then Kyrgyzstan will be an absolute highlight (as it is for almost everyone who visits!). Yurt and homestays will give you the opportunity to engage with local people in the ‘Stans. The diversity of China is often surprising and well worth exploring. South East Asia is a vibrant and popular destination, you can expect to see many other travellers while you are here unlike in Central Asia and China.
