Is this trip for me?

If you have decided that overlanding is for you, but just need to know which trip will best suit you, here are some things to think about:

Stamina – this is a HUGE trip, the longest trip currently available from any of the overland companies. Before signing up you will need to be pretty confident that you have the stamina to travel for 9 months. If you do, this is a truly unforgettable experience!

Accommodation – there is a lot of camping on this trip, and you can expect the standard of accommodation and campsites in the western and northern sections of the trip to be pretty basic.

Roughing it – Particularly in northern and West Africa you can expect some long, rough travel days, dusty conditions and basic accommodation, including some wild camps with no facilities at all. You can also expect that the truck will get stuck at some stage and you will need to help push it out. It is all part of the adventure, and the hardships often make the best memories, but it is something to keep in mind.

Weather – it can be very hot in places during the day (especially in Sudan and Egypt) but also can be surprisingly cold at night. In Ethiopia it is often colder and has more rain than many people expect.

Nature vs Culture – if you are interested in animals, this is a fantastic trip for you! There is nowhere else in the world that compares with Africa in terms of wildlife. This trip also includes a lot of cultural visits to villages and tribes, as well as plenty of museums, churches, temples and mosques, so there is something for everyone.

Activity – East and southern Africa has a well-developed adventure activity network and this trip offers plenty of opportunities to go white water rafting, horse riding, quad biking, hot air ballooning, bungee jumping and more.

Flexibility – This trans-Africa overland trip crosses many borders, and travels through some parts of the world where FCO Travel Advice may mean that the itinerary will need to change, so you need to have a flexible, go-with-the-flow attitude.
