TRANSPORT

A custom-built Mercedes Benz or MAN overland truck, designed especially for this expedition will be our home whilst on the road. It will do all the land legs possible with other forms of transport taking us to those more inaccessible areas required to get us to see as much as possible while en route. It might be camels in the deserts (we will cross two major ones), a local rickshaw or an old jeep to get us up some small mountain track, or down the back streets of some ancient Silk Road city. Even an old Russian ferry to cross the Caspian Sea! It's all an adventure and as an expedition member you can do it all and be involved in every stage. The more you are involved, the more you will enjoy it!

FOOD & ACCOMMODATION

We camp about 50% of the time during our expedition to Australia, with the remaining time spent in small local-run hotels or guesthouses. Don’t worry if you haven’t camped a lot in the past, we do it in style with large, easy-to-erect tents, comfy camp chairs, and amazing food cooked over an open fire or the gas cooker using fresh ingredients from the markets we visit along the way. Most of our ex-expedition members rate camping as a highlight of the trip as it really allows us to get off the beaten track, away from the crowds (other than curious locals!), and to experience some breathtaking scenery – from snow capped peaks to mud volcanoes, beautiful mountain streams to desert lakes – and everything in between!

COSTS

The cost is split into components, the Trip Price and Kitty.

Trip price £4,180 + Kitty £1,970 = Total £6,150

Trip price includes:

  • All land transport by expedition vehicle
  • All vehicle costs including fuel, tolls, ferries, seaport taxes
  • All the vehicle entrances
  • Services of the crew
  • Back-up, logistical and support from our UK office.

The Trip Price of £4,180 is paid to Odyssey Overland in full no less than 8 weeks before departure. This allows us to arrange all the required permits and other vital things for this expedition.

The Kitty of £1,970 is the second part of the price and is paid into a central fund on the day of departure. It funds accommodation, camp meals, local guides and activities that the group take part in as a whole. The expedition members and the group leader monitor this. This has been calculated as accurately as possible, but will be updated 2 weeks before the trip is due to depart, and while no increase is expected, due to the long lead time before departure it is impossible to be 100% sure. Local inflation and costs vary during the year and so we review the kitty before departure and during the trip. In the unlikely event of an increase this is expected to be by less than £100.
